Driving in China

China driving license for foreigners

International licences and IDPs are not enough on their own. Here is the practical route to a temporary driving permit for a rental car or eligible campervan.

The short answer

Foreign visitors can drive in mainland China, but not with an overseas licence or International Driving Permit alone. Short-term visitors normally need a Chinese temporary driving permit issued by a local traffic authority.

The temporary permit must be used together with your valid foreign driving licence and its Chinese translation when required. If you rent a vehicle, carry the rental contract while driving.

Procedures differ by city, pickup location and traveller profile. RV2GO checks the planned driver, pickup city and vehicle before confirming an RV rental.

Can foreigners drive an RV in China?

Yes, in some cases. The important point is that the driver and the exact campervan must both qualify.

For rented vehicles, official temporary-permit guidance limits the permitted vehicle categories to C1 or C2. Many compact motorhomes may fall within a C1-compatible registration category, but the word "RV" alone does not confirm eligibility.

Before accepting a booking, the vehicle's registration category, length, seating capacity, weight and transmission should be checked against the driver's foreign licence and temporary permit.

Large motorhomes, vehicles outside C1/C2, motorcycles and privately owned vehicles may follow different rules.

RV2GO confirms vehicle eligibility during enquiry. A temporary permit does not automatically authorise every campervan model.

Documents usually required

Exact requirements vary by city. Prepare these core documents before travelling and confirm the final checklist with the issuing office.

01

Passport and entry status

A valid passport plus the visa, residence permit or entry record required for your stay.

02

Valid foreign driving licence

Bring the original full licence. Learner, provisional or expired licences may not be accepted.

03

Chinese translation

If the licence is not in Chinese, use a translation agency or notarised translation accepted by the local authority.

04

Recent identification photos

Some offices request one-inch white-background photos or take the photo during application.

05

Local application details

A local address, phone number, appointment or application form may be required depending on the city.

06

Rental documents when driving

Carry the issued permit, foreign licence, translation and rental contract in the vehicle.

Typical application process

1. Confirm the city and vehicle

Choose the pickup city first. The temporary permit is normally handled by the traffic authority connected to the rental location.

2. Check your licence and translation

Confirm that your foreign licence is valid, covers the planned vehicle class and has an acceptable Chinese translation.

3. Submit the local application

Visit the designated vehicle management office or airport service point. Some cities provide online preparation or appointment services.

4. Complete road-safety education

Temporary-permit applicants may need to complete a road-traffic rules briefing before the permit is issued.

5. Verify the permit before pickup

Check the validity dates and authorised vehicle category before signing the final rental documents.

Timing and cost examples

There is no single nationwide promise for processing time or total cost. These examples show why the pickup city should be confirmed early.

Temporary permit or full Chinese licence?

Temporary driving permit

Usually the practical route for short-term visitors renting an eligible C1 or C2 vehicle. It follows the approved stay and may be valid from three months up to one year.

Full Chinese driving licence

More relevant to residents and longer-term drivers. The process may include a medical certificate, theory examination and additional local requirements.

Foreign vehicle entry

Bringing your own vehicle involves separate customs, temporary registration, insurance and route procedures. A driving permit alone is not enough.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive in China with an International Driving Permit?

No. An IDP cannot be used by itself to drive in mainland China. Short-term visitors normally need a Chinese temporary driving permit.

Can I apply before arriving in China?

Some cities provide online preparation, translation or appointment services, but the final application normally requires identity and licence verification by the local traffic authority. Confirm this for your pickup city.

Do I need a written or road test?

Temporary-permit procedures commonly use document review and road-safety education rather than a full written or road test. Age, licence type and local rules can change the process.

Can I drive any RV after receiving the permit?

No. For rented vehicles, the temporary permit covers C1 or C2 categories. The exact campervan registration and your authorised licence category must match.

Can I drive a friend's private vehicle?

A temporary permit for a visitor generally covers a rented vehicle or a vehicle temporarily brought into China under the required entry procedures. Do not assume it covers a privately owned local vehicle.
